We hope that you will not take it as a reflection on your intelligence, talent, or integrity to be told that you have not done a very good job of advertising yourself. HIGH GEAR has done nothing to you that is any worse than what you have been doing to yourself.
Editor's note: Unable to stand the heat, Robert Allan "I look fabulous in jeans" Hunter has decided to get out of the kitchen. We were going to run in this month's issue the letter he wrote which replied to the various replies to his article, but just before publishing, HIGH GEAR received another letter from him which You do not seem to appreciate said that his letter of reply to the what has caused the negative replies was not intended for pub-responses to your article. People lication in "Mailbag" or anywhere else in HIGH GEAR. According to his wishes, we will not be printing his letter even though the, news of our decision might cause weeping among those countless HIGH GEAR readers who hunger for more of Hunter's words, regarding his various statements as being intellectual equivalents to manna from heaven.
..
Fortunately, however, the reply that our managing editor wrote to Hunter's reply to the replies is largely self-explanatory, as you can see here for yourself.
(Hunter has not yet advised us that we may not print words written by any particular HIGH GEAR staff member.)
The Managing Editor Replies: It is no reflection on the quality of some product to point out that it has not been well advertised,
are not arguing that you lack talent or intelligence. They are responding to touches of vanity, smugness, and pompousness which they find irritating, touches which make it difficult for them to appreciate your talent and intelligence.
We ran your article because it was well written and made some interesting points. The most questionable thing we did was decide that because the article was well written we would run it just as you had written it.
Our greatest guilt, if guilt it is at all, is that we did not edit out those gauche and naive sentences in which you congratulate yourself on being so wonderful. It is arguable that we have been more charitable and done all we could to prevent your publicly making a fool of yourself.
We decided, however, that you were well enough able to take

care of yourself that you would not need, and would not want, charity. We were obviously mistaken.
Anyone as sophisticated as you have made yourself out to be would not have had his feelings hurt so easily.
If your self-congratulatory comments were meant jokingly, the joking obviously was not successful. Facing an audience which is unamused is an occasional nightmare which all comedians must learn to cope with.
Your response to Jeannette's comments indicates that han-

There are many other valid and interesting types of writing besides autobiography, a type of writing which you do not handle with much finesse, despite knowhow to use words.
dling put-down humor with grace is not one of your talents. Jeannette's words about wishing that you would commit suicide may have been crude and tasteless but only a very uptight indi-ing vidual would fail to distinguish between a bit of bitchy hyperbole and a serious literal statement.
If you do not like personal comments from readers, there is an obvious way to avoid most of them: Write about something else besides your own personal self.
If you hold something up and shout, "Here it is," you invite comments about it.
You seem to have some ideas which you can express clearly. Why clutter up what you write with so much autobiographical bric-a-brac?
It might turn out to be a very valuable educational experience for you, if you would try writing some articles for us without any use of first person pro¬nouns.
